This is tough stuff. I tried it for the first time for one of his naps today. I gave up after what felt like 2 hours but was probably only 30 minutes or so. He just screamed and screamed, he didn't know what was going on and he did not like it. I did get him to go to sleep without the pacifier though, but he doesn't always need it to fall asleep anyway (though he has more lately, which I hate. I also hate the swaddle, but that's another thing). I don't think the pacifier is a big problem though, he only wants it when he's sleepy.
Tonight Shawn did pick-up/put-down. I warned him it would be hard, he says he's tough, I wonder if he has a soul. After over an hour, Will is finally sleeping. I feel so bad for him. I mean, he's being held and comforted and everything, but I know he doesn't know what's going on and he definitely doesn't like it. Now that he's asleep I just want to go in there and pick him up and hold him.
Hey Reese, I saw this link on sleep training; it gives a little bit of a different approach. Maybe it could help if you guys decide this one isn't working very well.

Thanks for the link Michaela. I'm familiar with the Ferber method (sometimes called "cry-it-out") and I actually think it's cruel. I know it must work for some people but it would never work for Will.
